FSSAI temporarily permits the use of Diatomaceous Earth as a processing aid for filtration of honey

The letter issued by the FSSAI states that the use of Diatomaceous Earth as a processing aid for the filtration of honey, will not result in any enforcement action against Food Business Operators (FBOs) manufacturing honey. However, the letter categorically states that this relaxation must not be treated as a relaxation of notified standards of honey. Furthermore, the letter emphasizes that the relaxation will also not preclude the Food Safety Officers (FSOs)/ Designated Officers (DOs) from routine sampling, surveillance, enforcement in relation to honey.

FSSAI proposes draft Food Safety and Standards (Amendment) Rules, 2020

The draft rules propose a modification in the procedure of sampling and the manner of sending samples for analysis. They require that all the information relating to the Food Business Operator (FBOs), as contained in the label of the sample, should be masked. This masking must be done with non-detachable tamper-proof stickers. Furthermore, the Draft Rules state that the number of samples required for analysis of perishable items having a shelf-life of less than 7 days will depend on the condition of sampling. Under the existing rules, the requirement of four samples applied to all products and no distinction was made for perishable products. The Draft Rules also stipulate for a change in the procedure of Appeal to the Designated Officer by requiring that referral labs should complete analysis of samples within 14 working days of their receipt.
